5th International Equine Conference on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot, November 6–8, 2009
Article Outline
As subscribers to JEVS, you will read many of the fruits borne during the 5th International Laminitis Conference in upcoming issues. One of the features of this magnificent conference is the Conference Scholarship Program which supports professional and graduate students, farriers, veterinary nurses, and house officers (interns and residents), who would like to participate in a highly respected educational experience but lack the financial where with-all to shoulder the expenses associated with travel, conference registration, and housing. Industry, private donors, and foundations partnered to support this unique program beginning in 2003.
Dr. Nora Grenager, Board member and associate veterinarian at Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic, chaired the scholarship committee for the 5th International Laminitis Conference and on the recommendation of its members instituted a poster competition amongst all the scholarship recipients which were judged in four separate categories; the divisions were: (1) Best Case Made for an Industry Product Improving Equine Health; (2) Best Original Research; (3) Best Literature Review; and (4) Most Creative.
The posters can be viewed online at: http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.1016/j.jevs.2010.01.061. After reading the posters, please make your selection in each category and see how your results compare with the poster-judging committee. The posters are published on our website to maintain the highest quality duplication. I will publish the results of the first years' winners after all the posters have been published.
The number of scholarships awarded continues to grow, and this year a scholarship was offered to every college of veterinary medicine in North America. The Schools and Colleges selected the candidate to represent their institution at this conference. Unfortunately, not all colleges were able to take advantage of this special opportunity, and we hope in future conferences that we will have representation from all colleges of veterinary medicine. The Board of the International Laminitis Conference goal is to nurture, mentor, and stimulate the next generation of clinicians, academicians, and scientists to think in an evidence-based manner and advance the understanding, prevention, and treatment of equine laminitis.
We hope you will enjoy reading and judging the hard work of our current and future colleagues, and in the process become a part of the team that decisively succeeds in the Conferences' steadfast goal: to conquer laminitis. The Board also wants to thank the many supporters of the Conference Scholarship Program who understand Ben Franklin's philosophy: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
