Article Outline

Over the next several months, you will be treated to a series of topics organized, reviewed, and edited by Dr. Kevin Haussler. These subjects were carefully chosen by Kevin and me because the field of “Alternative Therapies” is an ever-changing specialty with more evidence-based treatments and many empirical modalities used to manage the horse with musculoskeletal problems and related issues.

There are a number of sections that you will read about, from acupuncture to physical therapy and chiropractic manipulation of the equine patient. Plenty of figures are included to guide you in better understanding and implementing these procedures in your daily practice. I must caution you about “jumping in” with both hands and feet; Dr. Haussler and his colleagues developed their expertise with many years of study and practice, so please partner with a clinician with the advanced training to assist you with the first “baby” steps or take a continuing education course on the subject. You will be richly rewarded with better care and results in your practice and most importantly improve the health of our four-legged friends.

I must admit that I was a skeptic when I first studied these alternative techniques, but to Dr. Haussler's credit he has made me a believer. I think you will agree; this is an excellent series.

Please enjoy the read and do not hesitate to email, write, or phone Ed and me with your comments and suggestions for future topics of interest.
