State of the Journal

Article Outline

I'm sitting here in my Kentucky office at the Gluck Equine Research Center reflecting on all that has happened during the past year, both with me personally and with the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.

I indicated before that, as of mid-October, I have started a new position at the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Center. My involvement will be 30% Executive Director of the Gluck Equine Research Foundation, 30% industry relations and development, and 30% research in equine reproduction.

In spite of the doom and gloom reports from Wall Street and from some of the recent horse sales, it has been a great year for the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science. You will have noticed that the Journal took the opportunity to publish the proceedings of the West Coast Equine Reproduction Symposium in the November issue. We also have made an arrangement with Equine Science Society to be their official journal and will publish the proceedings of their meeting to be held in Keystone, Colorado in June 2009. We are quite open to publishing proceedings of other veterinary meetings that are held within the US and around the world. If you are involved in any organization that is looking for a venue to publish conference proceedings, please feel free to contact me.

At the date of this writing (nearing the end of October), we have had 136 manuscript submissions to the Journal in 2008. This represents a 37% increase in submissions. We hope to continue to have an increased number of manuscripts submitted to the Journal so that more information can be provided to our readership each month.

I would like to thank all of the reviewers that have assisted in critiquing the manuscripts during the past year. I am quite aware of the effort that it takes to review articles and certainly appreciate the fine job that our reviewers have done. Our goal is to have the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science listed on PubMed for 2009, which will be of great benefit to both the authors and our readership.

I look forward to a great year in 2009.
