Editorial – JEVS Statistics

Article Outline

I am often asked, “How is the Journal doing?” The short answer is generally that it is doing well, but we could certainly use more manuscript submissions. Having completed my second year as Editor, I thought I would summarize some of the publication information. We have published 99 scientific articles since January 2006. The majority of these were original scientific articles and about one clinical case per issue. Nearly half of the articles came from the United States, with the remainder coming from 19 other countries, including Brazil, Germany, Belgium, Japan and Italy. Approximately one-third of published manuscripts dealt with reproduction; other well represented area included orthopedics, internal medicine, infectious disease and a surprisingly large number of nutrition papers (9). There were also six papers on equine behavior. Overall, during the two-year period (2006 and 2007), 185 manuscripts were submitted. Of those, 72 (39%) were rejected and 14 are undergoing revision. Over the past two years, the Journal has averaged approximately 46 pages per issue, but you will notice that the January issue, including the new section on Clinical Techniques, contains 65 pages.

I appreciate the many positive comments I have received about improvement of the Journal over the past two years. In turn, I congratulate the authors that have submitted the papers and, most importantly, the reviewers who have taken the time to review the manuscripts. At the back of this issue is a list of reviewers who have participated over the past two years. Many people have said that they wanted to see the Journal improve before submitting papers. This is a “chicken and egg” phenomenon in that, if they were to submit quality papers, it would help the Journal to improve. We feel there is a need for a US-published journal dedicated strictly to the equine veterinarian, and are confident that others agree. With the addition of Dr. Jim Orsini as Co-Editor we look forward to a great year in 2008.
