Editorial—Summer Meetings

Edward L. Squires, PhD

Article Outline

One of the activities that I will miss once I leave academics is attendance and presentations at scientific meetings. On June 5 through 9, 2007, several of us from Colorado State University will be attending the Equine Science Society (ESS) meeting to be held in Hunt Valley, MD [website: http://www.equinescience.org/2007/]. The Equine Science Society (formerly the Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society) is a group of equine scientists, veterinarians, industry representatives, and students that promote quality research on equine nutrition and physiology (exercise and reproductive physiology). This meeting, held every 2 years in various US locations, provides a communication platform for researchers, teachers, extension, and production personnel regarding equine nutrition and physiology. I first joined the Society in 1981, which was the first year that they included information on equine reproduction. The ESS meeting is especially accommodating for young graduate students who want to make their first presentation at a scientific venue. This year, there are 25 graduate student competition papers, as well as eight presentations that will be made by undergraduate students. Graduate student presentations will be made under the headings of nutrition, production and management, reproductive physiology, exercise physiology, and teaching and extension. In addition, other researchers and invited speakers will present their latest findings in nutrition, exercise physiology and reproduction.

Other meetings this summer include the ACVIM Forum, holding their 25th anniversary meeting in Seattle, June 6 through 9 [website: http://www.acvim.org/AnnualMeetingForum/index.aspx]. The Society for Theriogenology annual meeting, August 7 through 11 [website: http://www.therio.org/#], will be a joint meeting along with the American and Canadian Embryo Transfer Societies to be held in Monterey, CA. For more information on these summer events, please visit the website for each meeting.
